As the mercury climbs higher, Kelowna’s Gospel Mission has now had to implement its extreme weather protocols. Any day the temperature is forecast to reach 30'C or above, our dining room will be open during the peak heat hours to make sure the homeless and most vulnerable people in our community are taken care of and kept cool and safe.
Many clients of the Gospel Mission have health conditions that put them at higher risk for heat related illness. These include: low blood pressure, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and certain medications.
Extreme temperatures can have serious health implications. Whether it is the coldest month or the hottest, Kelowna’s Gospel Mission continues to serve those in need year round.
Kelowna’s Gospel Mission’s Executive Director, Randy Benson explains, “While high temperatures and clear days make for lovely beach weather, when you can’t ‘go home’ and cool off it can become very dangerous. As we have for over 20 years, when there is a need in Kelowna, Kelowna’s Gospel Mission is there to meet it. From a healthy meal to dental services, recovery programs, or a place to escape extreme heat – we are there, Leading People into Wholeness.
During this time of increased service provision because of extreme temperatures, Kelowna’s Gospel Mission is appealing to the community of Kelowna for their support and donations to help with this emergency health issue. Bottled water, ice packs and even “cold-hard cash” are all desperately needed. DONATE HERE
