Shelter Support Worker Temporary

KGM motor lodge facility – 3 month position

Job Summary. The primary purpose of this position is to provide a safe and secure environment for the homeless in Kelowna and those at risk of homelessness. The Shelter Support Worker Temporary helps to keep order and safety at the facility; helping those who need assistance including substance, alcohol, and emotional challenges; and provide specific shelter service and support to facility registrants.

Skill Set

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate the following:

  • At all times modelling our values of Compassion, Integrity, Respect, Transformation & Grace-led
  • maintain an excellent relationship with all guests, residents and clients
  • Complete intakes with residents
  • Deliver catered breakfast, lunch, and dinner to ECH registrants.
  • Communicate with other agencies that deliver prescription medication & safety supplies.
  • help keep order; identify and report any unusual behavior or other incidents that occur.
  • Maintain accurate records and details required by B.C. Housing and KGM
  • regular reporting to Supervisor, Team Lead, or Manager. Ensure that all frontline staff checklists are complete, including clipboards, spreadsheets.
  • Communicate respectfully. Refrain from gossip, bullying, sexual harassment.
  • Maintain a neat, clean and safe environment, inside and out, of the facility, observant of all health and safety guidelines.
  • Co-operate with Emergency Services such as RCMP, BCAS, KFD whenever necessary.
  • stay updated and be aware of all Policies and Procedures of Kelowna’s Gospel Mission including Health & Safety, Violence, Bullying, Gossip, and Workplace Harassment.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience dealing with people who are homeless and at risk of homelessness.   Basic report writing and data entry, Word and Outlook required.  Previous experience working 4-on 4-off preferred.  8 hours shifts with opportunity to pick up shifts.  Drug and alcohol addictions support experience is a strong asset. Must be able to work alone for long periods of time.
